Story brief

The soda maker Genki Forest is going to release a diet coke-flavor drink which maintains coke flavor while eliminating chemical preservatives, targeting consumers who demand a healthy diet.

Story in detail

According to an article on the WeChat official account of Future Consumption (https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/hn5zinbOARn8Fv0Im9gBRQ), different from conventional diet coke products developed by Coca-Cola and Pepsi, Genki Forest’s diet coke focuses on removal of preservatives such as sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate, as well as the replacement of chemical additives by natural ingredients. The new coke-related product is Genki Forest’s early attempt of exploring the diet coke market.

Implication

Although the concept of diet coke drinks no longer sounds brand new in beverage market, Genki Forest attaches the importance to ruling out common additives in diet cokes to maintain flavor and quality. The “zero-ness” of Genki Forest products allows the coke to stand out from traditional coke products and attract consumers who have a strict diet to keep fit and those who pay attention to details of the nutrition facts table on the bottle. Food brands developing healthy food products today should not only put emphasis on restoring the original and natural flavor of food itself, but only ensure the “zero additive” quality of their products to meet consumers increasing demand of healthy ingredients from the nature of food.
